Historical fiction set in Venice in 1710 and inspired by Agata de la Pieta, an orphan musician of the Ospedale de la Pieta. After her mother dies, ten-year-old Agata is sent to the Pieta, where the orphanage's music school becomes both refuge and confinement as she grows into her musical gifts and faces a choice between the life music has given her and the possibility of family.
